10. Vegetables Department

Description

Vegetables are mainly grown in the coastal part of Cyprus . In 2000 the area under vegetables was 14500 ha representing 7.7% of the total cropped area or 29% of the total irrigated land Potatoes took up about 62% of the vegetable area, which was the most important vegetables crop in terms of both volume and value of production. In 2000, vegetables were grown on 260ha of greenhouses, as well as on an undetermined area of low tunnels.

In the five years period 1996-2000 the average annual value vegetable production was reduced to £64 million, compared to £66.6 million in the period 1991-1995 and represented about 38% of the crop production or 18% of the total agricultural output. The value of potatoes accounted for 37% of the total value of vegetable production. In the same period, exports of vegetables averaged £19.5 million of which £16.3 million were from potatoes and only £32 million from other fresh vegetables. Of the other vegetables, tomatoes, Melons, cucumbers and leafy vegetables were the most important. The main country of destination for vegetables was the UK . As a result of the serious drought that stroke Cyprus during the last five years, irrigation, water provided for agriculture was limited. The volume of production of certain agricultural products, especially of potatoes was decreased. Moreover, various marketing problems encountered with main agricultural products and specifically potatoes, lead to the reduction of the value of vegetables. Thus the value of vegetable production was reduced by 4% in period 1996-2000, compared to the period 1991-1996. In order to solve marketing problems a bundle of measures were introduced. At the same time certain vegetables were supported in the frame of the Technical and Advisory Committee of Agricultural Policy.
