Description
Olive trees are traditionally cultivated in Cyprus . They are grown in compact groves or more often, in a mixture with other crops. Olive trees are also found scattered in uncultivated land. They are grown on about 7200 ha all over the island and represent 5.3% of the cropped area. The volume of olive production in 2000 was 21500 t. However owing to the biennial bearing of the trees and the cultivation of olives under rain fed conditions, yields are extremely erratio and olive production exhibits extreme fluctuation from year. In the five years period 1996-2000 olives contributed 2.4% of total agricultural output and their share of crop production was 4.9%. New table olive varieties, which have been introduced in Cyprus and are grown under irrigation, have increased production, reduced annual fluctuation and Cyprus became self-sufficient in both olives and olive oil. Under the citrus reform plan motivations were given to replace uprooted areas with olive trees. Thus it is expected that in the coming year's table olive as well as olive oil production will increase. (Source: Norm input-output data for the main crop and livestock enterprises of Cyprus .
