Description Bananas are grown in the southwest coastal part of the island on an area of about 320 ha. During the last five years the area under bananas increased, while banana production fluctuated between 8000 to 13000t. In 2000 the value of banana production reached £ 2.7 million shoving a decline of 20 % over 1995. The increase in the volume of production was due to increased areas by 23% over 1995. Cyprus used to be a net importer of bananas but since 1970 it has become self sufficient and after 1983 started facing marketing problems due to surplus production. Until; 1995 marketing problems were limited due to the decline of cultivated areas. Following the implementation of the GATT agreement and the increase in cultivated areas marketing problems have increased.
