Description
Vines have long been one of the most important crops of Cyprus both from the economic and social point of view. They are grown on an area of 19200 ha and cover 14% of the total cultivated area. Table grapes, which represent about 11% of the total vine area, are grown in the southwest coastal strip of the island. The remaining 89% of the vine area is under wine grapes of the local varieties Black and Xinisteri. Annual production of grapes in the five-year period 1996-2000 was reduced to 110000 t or by 38% compared to the previous five years period. Their value decreased to an average of £16.6 million which accounted for about 4.7% of the total value of agricultural production or 10% of the value of crop production. In the same period exports of fresh table grapes decreased about 3850 t (compared to 6300t in the previous five year period) representing 4.6% of the value of the raw agricultural exports. In light of the diminishing exports of table grapes in 1997, it was decided to introduce a support scheme subsidies were provided to Soultana table grapes exported in car or container freezers, to organic table grapes exported by plain and to exported table grapes packed in pun nets. As a result of this scheme table grape exports recovered and are currently 3800 t, compared to 2700t in 1997. (Source: Norm input-output data for the main crop and livestock enterprises of Cyprus .
